Rainout ends Town Challenge bike series

Canceled finale leaves results murky

— There’s only so much drama that can be packed into a bi-weekly bike race where all the competitors return to being fast friends as they suck on popsicles minutes after the race.

Wednesday’s Town Challenge Mountain Bike Race Series finale promised to have the maximum amount of possible drama, however, as the season-ending event was set up to decide close points races up and down the list of divisions and in the top categories for the men and women.

That’s what made the race’s cancellation announcement all the more upsetting to the gathered riders, left Wednesday evening to head for cover at the base of Howelsen Hill as a short but fearsome storm laid waste to what would have been a fitting end to the event’s exciting summer season.

Winners still will be decided. Some athletes left excited and others walked away heartbroken, but none wanted it to end like this.

“Everyone was so geared up,” race director Gretchen Sehler said, her expression as gloomy as the gray skies. “We were hoping just for a delay, and I had a backup course ready, but it really rained hard. There was no hope.”

Brad Bingham was crowned the men’s season-long champ for the second consecutive year, a decision reached essentially by a vote among the riders in the men’s pro division.

Peter Kalmes won the last two races of the season and showed up at Howelsen on Wednesday clinging to a two-point lead in the overall standings.

Racers are allowed to drop results from one race per season, and the debate grew around how best to handle that rule. The pro riders voted not to have the dropped race be Wednesday’s, allowing the championship to be decided by a rider’s best five results from the six contested races, rather than from the six results from the seven scheduled races.

That left Bingham on top.

“I’m really happy that I came out riding really strong in the early season, like I intended, but I felt myself slowing down these last couple races, and Peter’s just been flying,” Bingham said. “I’ll be fired up next year.”

Kalmes was second and Trevor Walz finished third.

“I’ll try it again next year,” an upbeat Kalmes said.

At least it was a result. Wednesday had the makings of a cutthroat race for the women’s title as Kelly Boniface entered with a chance to retake the Town Challenge championship after she was knocked off the top spot a year ago by Tammy Jacques.

The women came in tied, and they left tied, as well, resulting in a split title.

Wednesday promised local bike racing at its finest, riders from young to old gearing up for one last chance to take back points, and the disappointment of the canceled race even left some young competitors in tears.

Winner or runner-up, it wasn’t the way anyone wanted things to end.
