Verizon Wireless still out across Northwest Colorado

— Verizon Wireless cell service went out across Northwest Colorado, including Steamboat Springs.

Verizon spokesman Bob Kelley said 32 of the company's cell tower sites are affected. The outage was caused when a CenturyLink fiber line was cut in the Frisco/Dillon area this afternoon.

It appears the outage began sometime shortly after 2 p.m. Monday.

Locally, Routt County Clerk and Recorder Kay Weinland said that because her office uses Verizon as an internet service provider, they couldn't access the statewide voter registration system this afternoon. That means inactive voters who stop in to pick up a mail ballot will have to either fill out a provisional ballot or wait until service is restored. As of 4 p.m. today, elections deputy Kim Bonner said only six or seven inactive voters had to be given provisional ballots.

Weinland said she's working on finding a backup internet provider in the event Verizon service isn't restored by Election Day on Tuesday.

it went in the middle of a conference call...this sucks. You would think verizon would not have a single point of failure like a single line if fiber.

One would also think that an office with the level of responsibility handling Voting and it's related areas would simply pay for a second ISP for times such as these. Cheap insurance. But what would I know about Information Technology?

Qwest/CenturyLink internet was down for a bit, and couldn't call long distance, but local calls worked. Sprint cell worked fine all day.

not very encouraging to know that these telecomm companies don't have more redundancy in their systems. glad things are back up and running now.

I'm glad they got it back up. It's amazing how lost you can be without your cell. Izyc
