Steamboat Springs Chalk it up to an off day.
That’s pretty much the way to explain what happened to Steamboat Springs High School runners Asher Rohde and Scott Powers.
The two seniors struggled Saturday at the state meet at the Arapahoe County Fair Grounds in Aurora, each logging slower times than anticipated.
Rohde finished 42nd in 17 minutes, 43.47 seconds. Powers was 146th in 19:10.02.
“Neither of those guys had it today,” assistant coach Greg Long said. “They ran aggressive. They went out exactly where they needed to be. But both were done at the mile mark.”
The course featured a fast downhill start before an uphill section near the mile mark.
Long said that after the uphill section, he knew times would be slower than anticipated.
Even with the results, however, the two are going to continue to run. Long said both will compete in the Nike Cross Regionals in late November in Gilbert, Ariz.
“It’s easy to have a bad race and say, ‘I’m done,’” Long said. “But they’re going to keep going. They’re not out of shape; it was just a bad day.”
Moffat County’s Alfredo Lebron won the Class 4A title with a time of 16:24.87. Tabor Scholl, who used to run in the Steamboat Springs Running Series, finished first in the Class 3A girls. Scholl, a Middle Park freshman, ran an 18:37.62.
