Navigator Awards handed out to Steamboat businesses, residents

— The Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association and the Steamboat Pilot & Today handed out awards Friday at the annual Navigator Awards luncheon at Sheraton Steamboat Resort. Nancy and Richard Schwanke, of Light Works of Steamboat, were honored as the Sustainable Business of the Year for helping many local business cut their energy bills with more environmentally friendly light fixtures.

Steamboat Ski & Resort Corp. marketing specialist Sara Ferris, who donates her time to youth causes, took home the Young Professional of the Year award.

Businessperson of the Year Grant Fenton, of Steamboat Investment Advisors, thanked the many cycling advocates who helped him make Bike Town USA a reality this year. He challenged the audience to go further and fulfill the original goal for the Yampa River Core Trail to extend all the way to Dinosaur.

Alpine Bank President Adonna Allen left the crowd misty eyed as she accepted the Business of the Year award on behalf of her colleagues. Allen recalled the impression her late grandfather made on her when he described the experience of driving over Rabbit Ears Pass from Nebraska for the first time driving a farm tractor.

“Every time I come over the pass, I think, ‘Thank God I’m home,’” Allen said
