Rex Brice: Support winter air tax
Advertisement
I’m writing in support of Referendum 2B. As a local business owner, I know the importance of regular, consistent commercial air service to our economy. I can tell you that every one of my employees at Mazzola’s, Big House Burgers, Lil’ House and Rex’s American Grill & Bar sees the difference in wages, hours and tips when the planes start flying in for the winter season.
A vote for 2B is a vote to make Steamboat’s economy stronger, keep our jobs and protect our Steamboat lifestyle. We’re all in this together. So join me in voting “yes” on Referendum 2B.

Hi YVB -
One of the things I enjoy about the "blogs" are the exchanges that take place. I often learn things and gain insights into new ways of looking at an issue. Your comments are thoughtful and provide an interesting perspective. I often read them and I appreciate your passion.
Sarcasm has its place. However, each of us that participate in the blogs need to be watchful that we do not allow it to become personal. When this happens, it stifles the exchange which is a shame.

Is it just me or is anyone else getting tired of being bombarded by the ads and letters? This afternoon I had the third call in 10 days from an opinion poll asking how I would vote on 2B. Seems a little late in the game. Are there still undecided voters in "readerland"?
Since a recorded voice took my answers I could not give all my personal reasons for voting NO but took the poll for the 3rd time anyway. As Sled mentioned in an earlier post the supporters still must have concerns about the silent and angry 99%. Of course on this issue I have been anything but silent . . . . . : )

IMHO, I prefer the burgers and fries at Rex's. Let me qualify that. I haven't dined at either establishment in over 9 months. I used to prefer Rex's. As long as Rex's doesn't adopt shoestring fries, I'll be back.
P.S. I used to prefer Mazzola's, too. Not no more. I wonder who owns all these businesses?

Cindy,
Those are very rarely opinion polls that care what you think. They are "push polls" designed to sway your opinion with a series of leading questions.
Most infamous push polls was used against McCain asking if you'd be more, the same, or less like to vote for McCain in the South Carolina primary if he had a mixed race child our of wedlock. The truly evil part of the question was that no such child existed.
So would you be more, the same, or less likely to vote for 2B if you were told the local economy would collapse if it didn't pass? (Not actually claiming the economy would collapse, just asking a hypothetical question).

And of course the pollsters have to consider the new and growing demographic group---the AMAMCUID's that don't want to pay any more "STINKIN' TAXES" --especially to benefit Fortress. "Angry Middle Aged Middle Class Working Until I Die" group. Retirement??? not in the vocab!!

Cindy, re: taxes on FOOD.
This is a regressive TAX!
According to Wikipedia (the source of all pertinent knowledge)
"... a regressive tax imposes a greater burden (relative to resources) on the poor than on the rich — there is an inverse relationship between the tax rate and the taxpayer's ability to pay as measured by assets, consumption, or income."
Who is howling for the poor now?

thanks jeff....yes it is a regressive tax designed to make working class people pay.
I am truly shocked by the number of working class people voting and campaigning for this tax.
shockingly ignorant
and easily persuaded

Hence, 1999, my anger at City Council for even letting this initiative be put to a public vote. THEY NEVER CONFRONTED THE SUPPORTERS NOR ASKED THE IMPORTANT QUESTIONS. The "old guard" has got to go. Enough with the "good ole boy network" in this community. We need the City leaders to THINK before they act.

I agree with you Cindy, this is an inappropriate item on the ballot.
This vote is strictly to bail-out Ski Corp. Ski Corp is lazy and expecting us to pay for their business. (The term "Steamboat is a cash cow" for the Ski Corp ring a bell?)
Ski Corp can find a way to pay for the subsidy (should this vote fail as I hope it does). Ski Corp used their marketing resources to put a scary tactic on every employee in the lodging industry in Steamboat. Wake up !!! vote NO

YVB I love the Thursday night burgers at Old Town Pub during mud season.
Cindy Old people are tired of bending over for tax increases. 2009 I was still working and took a 10% wage cut. Property taxes still went up. Retired Oct. 2009. 2010 No increase in SS. Property taxes still went up. 2011 No increase in SS. Property taxes still went up. 2012 Finally an increase in SS. I bet property taxes go up plus city wants more sales tax, state wants more sales tax, state wants more income tax.
Taxes are a Black Hole that is sucking the life out of this country!

And I just heard the county is trying to squeeze the Ag exemption too.
There is something quasi-criminal about a governing body riding the upward wave of property value all the way to the top as a revenue stream and then de-coupling itself from or making adjustments to it that allows them to continue raising taxes in a falling economy.
My taxes went up when my real estate went up; they should go DOWN as my real estate drops. What the hell?????????????????

Correct me if I am wrong, but we just gave the ski area money for the bathrooms in the new stage at the base. Why are we giving tax money to private industry. Now the want us for to pay for empty seats that they can't fill. This is left over ASC mentality. The new financial person is ex ASC. They continue to try and ruin this town. We need new blood there. Vote no on 2B.

What I find ironic is that the usual suspects favor this tax.
Where are the complaints from the anti-corporatist crowd about this corporate welfare?
And no gnashing of teeth from the anti-tax pro-corporatist populace?
What's the antonym of NIMBY?
