Steamboat Springs If the numbers didn’t tell the story before the Steamboat Springs and Palisade football teams took the field on Friday night, a quick glance at the rosters finished the narrative.
The Bulldogs had the physical advantage, but they also have 48 players. Steamboat’s roster has a mere 26 — a handful of whom were on the sidelines in sweatpants because of injuries.
Add it all up, and Friday’s 58-7 Palisade win becomes easy to explain.
“We knew we had our hands full,” Steamboat coach Lonn Clementson said. “They are just plain better than we are.”
The Bulldogs had all but secured the win in the first 12 minutes of the game. Their lead was so large that a running clock was put in place by the end of the second quarter.
Palisade went up 21-0 in the first quarter on three touchdowns by quarterback Luke McLean — two rushing and an 8-yard toss to running back JT Townsend. The Bulldogs (7-1 overall, 4-1 league) added 23 points in the second quarter to take a 44-0 lead at one point.
Steamboat got a touchdown on the last play of the first half, an 18-yard strike from Christian Ramirez to Michael Yost.
The Sailors offense struggled mightily. In 11 possessions, Steamboat had five 3-and-outs and three turnovers. Steamboat had just 103 yards in the game, including none in the second half.
“Steamboat has some good kids,” Palisade coach John Arledge said. “They just haven’t won this year. They’re just down right now, but I’ve been up here where it’s been pretty rough. ... Our line got off the ball well tonight, and that’s what we needed.”
Steamboat (0-8, 0-5) returns to action at 7 p.m. Friday when the team travels to Battle Mountain.
Battle Mountain is currently 7-1 and in line to make the playoffs for the first time since 1994. The team beat Palisade 49-28 earlier this year.
“We’re not down,” Clementson said. “We’ve still got two more chances to win a football game.”

"Steamboat’s roster has a mere 26???" Is football that unpopular that a school with over 600 students has a roster of only 26?
Is it just football that has declined or have other sports seen a similar drop in participation?

Well, from seeing practices while driving past, it looks like the soccer team has good participation.

I'm guessing there is a lack in participation because the coaching is terrible! In 2 years this school has gone from a runner up in the state championship, to a team that couldn't beat an 8 man squad. Yikes!!!!

But they're all winners...

Sled, thanks for my laugh of the day!!

They don't pass out participation trophies for football.

The previous coach quit, and if there was not much talent or participants one could somewhat understand why. Might not be the coaching today as much as just a lack of interest from kids in school.

Per ybul's 'previous coach:"
Finch steps down as Steamboat's football coach by Luke Graham
Or is it just seeking prestige and money? Not a lot of NFL/MLB/NBA/NHL players were spawned from the Boat O' Steam. Our young salmon are swimming elsewhere.

Jeff, I thought they passed out participation trophies for everything these days?
ybul, I see fields full of young kids who want to play football, they just need some proper coaching. As Jeff pointed out I guess Mr. Finch was wrong in his assessment of Coach Clementsons ability to run this program.
