Steamboat Springs A pair of Steamboat Springs High School runners broke from the pack Wednesday at the regional cross-country meet in Delta to earn trips to the state championship meet Oct. 29 at the Arapahoe County Fairgrounds in Aurora.
Asher Rohde logged another strong race, finishing fifth, and teammate Scott Powers unleashed his best performance of the season for a ninth-place finish.
Runners had to finish in the top 15 to make the state field as individuals.
“They both ran a good race,” Steamboat coach Andy Reust said. “Asher ran his race he’s been running almost all year, and Scott really stepped up. He’s a senior, so he really wanted to make it to state his last year.”
The course was flat and fast and the day was cool. It amounted to perfect running weather, and Steamboat’s top two took advantage. It didn’t take any great surge. Both found their spots early in the race and stuck to them.
Reust said both posted personal best times in the 5-kilometer race, although the exact times weren’t available Wednesday night.
“Scott probably had his best time by 45 seconds or a minute,” Reust said.
The two will be alone in representing Steamboat at state, but they weren’t alone in notching good races. Reust said the five sophomores on his girls team also impressed.
“They each ran faster than any girl we had last year,” he said. “I was happy. They’re a very talented group.”
