Controlled burn occurring through midweek at Steamboat Ski Area

The smoke billowing from Mount Werner on Monday was from controlled burns of slash piles. Expect to see more of the same through midweek.

The U.S. Forest Service is burning wood that couldn’t be sold or is leftover from summer logging operations at Steamboat Ski Area, said Mark Cahur, fire management officer for the Routt National Forest.

The controlled burn at the ski area is scheduled to continue through today, weather permitting, Cahur said. He said more work would take place at the ski area after the snow starts to fall to burn leftover piles before opening day of the 2011-12 ski season.

Cahur said controlled burns are scheduled to take place in other parts of Routt National Forest into December.
