Steamboat Springs The smoke billowing from Mount Werner today is from controlled burns of slash piles. The U.S. Forest Service is burning wood that couldn’t be sold or is leftover from summer logging operations at the Steamboat Ski Area this week, said Mark Cahur, fire management officer for the Routt National Forest.
The controlled burn at the ski area was scheduled to continue through Wednesday, weather permitting, Cahur said. He said more work would take place at the ski area after the snow starts to fall to burn leftover piles before opening day of the 2011-12 ski season.
Cahur said controlled burns are scheduled to take place in other parts of the Routt National Forest into December.
