Hayden Hotchkiss running back Jacobe Galley can be unstoppable when the ball is in his hands.
And Friday in Hayden, the junior who was the fifth-leading rusher in Class 1A coming into the game, was simply superb.
Galley touched the ball 10 times, scored four touchdowns and helped No. 2 Hotchkiss roll over Hayden, 66-13.
“He’s a true talent,” Bulldogs coach Zac Lemon said. “I mean, he’s a great kid and he loves football.”
Galley was more than enough for Hotchkiss (7-0, 3-0 in league play) to get past Hayden.
In a game that featured the Class 1A Western Slope League’s top two teams, about everything was decided in the first 12 minutes.
Hotchkiss ran out to a 26-0 lead on two touchdown runs from Galley and one each from Jaime Rodriguez and Braeden Horton.
Hayden’s Mark Doolin started the second quarter with a 68-yard scamper to cut it to 26-7, but Hotchkiss responded with three straight touchdowns to go into halftime up 46-7.
“I haven’t seen (No. 1) Burlington, but (Hotchkiss) is one of the best,” Hayden coach Shawn Baumgartner said. “They have size up front and speed across the board. When you play a team like this, you can’t have any mistakes.”
Hayden tried to spread out Hotchkiss’ defense early with a passing attack. But six turnovers curtailed any thoughts of an upset.
Doolin added a late 2-yard scamper in the fourth for Hayden’s final scoring. Doolin led Hayden (3-4, 2-1) with 93 yards rushing on 10 carries. Galley rushed for 152 yards on nine carries.
“We still have a good chance to finish second place in the league,” Baumgartner said. “We’ll see how the (playoff seeding) committee sees things, but history shows our league usually gets two or three teams” to the playoffs.
Hayden next plays at 7 p.m. Friday at home against Meeker.
