Xcel Energy workers cause Steamboat Springs power outage
Updated October 11, 2011 at 11 p.m.
Steamboat Springs Yampa Valley Electric Association officials said a brief citywide power outage Tuesday morning was caused by Xcel Energy employees working at a substation near 13th Street.
YVEA Operations Manager Bill Caynor said the workers tripped a piece of equipment that took out power to about 16,900 customers between 10 and 10:03 a.m.
Caynor said the substation is operated by Xcel Energy and delivers power to YVEA’s substations. He said affected areas included Steamboat Springs, Clark and Stagecoach.
According to a news release from the city of Steamboat Springs, the outage disabled Internet for all the city’s departments and buildings. Officials expected to have the problem fixed by noon today. People who need to contact city departments should call instead of email.
