Steamboat man taken to hospital after suspected DUI crash

— A 49-year-old Steamboat Springs man was taken to Yampa Valley Medical Center late Sunday night with facial injuries after police said he crashed his Chevy Suburban in the 1100 block of Yampa Street while reportedly driving under the influence of alcohol and then fled the scene.

Steamboat Springs Police Sgt. Scott Middleton said Russell Wade Riley was found unconscious with a head injury at 12th Street and Lincoln Avenue around 9 p.m. Sunday.

Middleton said late Sunday night that Riley still was being evaluated at the hospital and is expected to be taken into custody on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and leaving the scene of an accident after he is cleared by medical staff.

Middleton said police still were investigating whether Russell’s injuries were caused by the accident or if they occurred after he left the vehicle.

“We’re not sure yet if the injuries were from the collision or if he fell afterwards,” Middleton said. “He was too inebriated to provide any information on that.”

Middleton said the amount of damage seen at the accident scene was not consistent with Riley’s injuries and indicated he crashed with a low impact. No one else was injured in the crash.

perhaps our city and county law enforement should have a sting operation set up at bars to see if any bartenders are "recommending" booze to patrons that are already drunk???

that would be a far better use of taxpayer money than the recent worthless "sting operation"

Let's look at the positive side of this: - Nobody got hurt. - Mr. Riley will get some much-needed alcohol education. - Some attorney will make thousands of dollars off this. - Routt County and the state of Colorado also stand to profit. - This also provides employment for some auto body shop. - Winter Sports Club or some other such worthy organization will receive the benefits of Mr. Riley's public service. - Maybe Mr. Riley wil advance to trustee at the jail, helping provide nutritious, delicious meals to his fellow miscreants. - And the list goes on.

See how much good Mr. Riley did? Providing all that work, for all those people, the good old all-American way, just getting drunk. How easy was that? Dang dopers are a lot tougher to catch, not wrecking their cars and attracting our attention. I'll bet two or three drove by, giggling in their godawful euphoria. Get drunk, like real Americans.
