Steamboat Springs It was a struggle early, but the Hayden High School football team found the sweetest relief Friday as it beat up on Rangely, 34-6.
The Tigers blew open a 7-6 first-quarter game by amassing 250 yards on the ground. That’s just what the team had hoped to do as it has struggled through the first half of the season with its running attack.
“We were a lot better running the ball,” Hayden coach Shawn Baumgartner said. “That was our focus this week, and it was nice to be able to execute that part of our game plan.”
Finding success there was important considering the week the Tigers have in front of them. They welcome one of Class 1A’s top teams to town Friday night for a battle of Western Slope undefeated teams. Hayden, 3-3 and 2-0, plays Hotchkiss at 7 p.m. Friday.
“We’re right where we wanted to be,” Baumgartner said.
