— It was a cool fall morning a year ago that helped Bunsen burners heat up on cold winter afternoons.

The nearly $10,000 raised at the inaugural Steamboat Sneak running race went to help purchase science equipment at Steamboat Springs’ two public elementary schools, Soda Creek and Strawberry Park.

Cristina Magill said she’s hoping this year’s race, set to begin at 9 a.m. Saturday at Steamboat Springs High School, can continue to help fill school funding shortfalls, just like last year.

“The idea behind it, it’s a fundraiser. We’ve taken the traditional sense of fundraising we’ve done in schools, sending children door to door selling something, and completely changed that,” Magill said. “We have some wonderful sponsors for the race, and we’ll have a great prize drawing, and we’ve been able to go away from sending the children door to door and giving a third party 50 percent of our profits.”

Saturday’s events offer something for every member of the family, from the slowest to the fastest. Longer 10- and 5-kilometer races start at 9 a.m. and will wrap around town along Butcher Knife Trail, out into Strawberry Park and eventually back to the high school.

A fun run, consisting of one lap around the high school’s track, begins at 10 a.m. and should offer an opportunity for the whole family to participate.

“People can run it or walk it and the whole community is invited,” Magill said.

Registration forms have been sent home with students at the schools and are available at www.runningseries.com and before the event Saturday at the high school. The cost is $25 for adults. Children will pay their age to participate.

The race is the first part of the Steamboat Springs Winter Running Series, which will continue Nov. 5 with a Girls on the Run 5-kilometer race, an event that’s expected to draw 500 runners.

The series also includes the Nov. 24 Turkey Trot, the Feb. 11 Love the Run You’re With and the March 10 Steamboat Pentathlon.
