Steamboat Springs Three Wire Bar & Grill, the new restaurant at Yampa Valley Regional Airport, took off Monday and served its first customers but was grounded Tuesday because of a mechanical issue and is expected to remain closed until at least the weekend.
Assistant Airport Manager Dean Smith said the restaurant had to close at about 2 p.m. Tuesday and that there was a 10-by-10-foot hole in the floor Wednesday as repairs were under way.
“They’re in the process of excavating it at the moment,” Smith said. “We are hoping to reopen by the weekend. We can’t serve food with the water shut down, but I’d rather have this problem now than in January.”
The staff of Three Wire Bar & Grill also will prepare food for the Way Station snack bar inside the secure passenger waiting area at the airport. Smith said the original plan was to open the Way Station on Dec. 15, but those plans have been accelerated and food service there tentatively is set to begin Friday.
When Three Wire Bar & Grill reopens, the hours at both food service operations will be from 5:30 a.m. until 2 p.m., Smith said, though hours will be expanded as demand increases.
The ski season direct flight program begins in earnest Dec. 15 when the first flights from Houston, Chicago and Dallas are scheduled to arrive. The hours of operation at the restaurants deliberately will be flexible, Smith said, to account for days when travelers end up spending more time at the airport than they had anticipated because of weather or other delays.
“We will definitely stay open and take care of our passengers,” Smith said.
He emphasized that the focus of the restaurant operators extends beyond airline passengers to include the broader public.
“It’s a full-service restaurant that will serve breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week for local residents, not just passengers,” Smith said.
