Steamboat Springs’ Bryan Fletcher continued where he left off last season, opening the 2011-12 Nordic combined season with an 18th-place finish in the FIS Nordic Combined World Cup event in Kuusamo, Finland, on Friday.
Fletcher was the top American finisher at the snowy event. He was 11th after the jumping portion, but fell back seven spots as a result of the cross-country ski.
“It was a solid day for Bryan,” U.S. coach Dave Jarrett said in a news release. “He had a good comp jump but started a little too fast in the race and lost some places on the last lap. Overall a solid start to the season for him.”
Norwegian Magnus Krog won the event. Akito Watabe of Japan was second and German Tino Edelmann was third.
American Billy Demong was 20th overall, and Taylor Fletcher was 33rd.
Another competition is Saturday in Finland.
