South Routt School Board welcomes new members
Tim Corrigan reappointed board president
Oak Creek — As she stepped away from the South Routt School Board she has served on for the past 17 years, Linda Long told her
fellow board members Thursday night that she’ll remain
on the school district’s speed dial.
“I won’t be too far away,” Long said before she ceded her District 4 seat to new board member Jules Palyo. “It was an honor to serve.”
Long decided not to seek re-election for a seat on the board in the district she began serving in 1971 as a teacher’s aide.
Palyo, owner of Flat Tops Ranch Supply in Phippsburg, was sworn in with returning board members Tim Corrigan (District 6) and Brett Mason (District 7) and newcomer Jamie Hoff, who was appointed to the District 3 seat vacated by Willie Smith in August.
Hoff, who said he applied for the open board seat because he has two children attending South Routt Elementary School, was interviewed by the board briefly before the start of Thursday’s meeting.
After the swearing-in ceremony, the board voted unanimously to appoint Corrigan as board president and Joel Harris as vice president. Gena Hange will serve as the board’s secretary, and John McCollum was appointed treasurer.
Corrigan, who has served as board president for five years, thanked his fellow board members for again appointing him to the leadership role.
“I never thought I would be on the board this long, let alone president this long,” he said. “I’m honored you guys are willing to let me go a little longer.”
Corrigan first was elected to the board in 2003.

■ The School Board heard an update from Superintendent Scott Mader about the district’s participation in the state’s Education Effectiveness Pilot, which will change the way teachers and principals in the district are evaluated. Mader said that this year the district is working to incorporate student achievement into the evaluation of its principals as mandated by Senate Bill 10-191. Mader predicted it will be a challenge for the district to find a fair way to incorporate student achievement into the evaluation system.
■ Mader and the board recognized more than 15 South Routt Elementary School girls for their participation in the Girls on the Run 5K race Nov. 5 in Steamboat Springs. “For all of these girls to finish this 5K in grand style and encourage each other along the way, I think, is terrific,” elementary school Principal Raylene Olinger said. Of the more than 500 girls from Northwest Colorado who participated, four girls from South Routt were among the top 15 to cross the finish line at Steamboat Springs Middle School, Olinger said.
■ The board voted to hire David Bruner as the head high school girls basketball coach and Kelly Carlson as the assistant coach.
