The ski season that starts next week will be my 10th in Steamboat Springs. Another 20 and I might even be considered a local. Makes me feel kind of bad for some of my co-workers who have a much longer road ahead of them.

Turnover isn’t unusual in our newsroom. We’re lucky to be able to hire smart and hungry young journalists who hone their skills in our beautiful community for a few years before setting off toward new challenges. The next wave of smart, hungry, young journalists then takes their place.

We’ve had particularly good stability during the past few years, with the difficult economy surely playing a role in the decision of some staff members to remain in Steamboat longer than perhaps they intended. Our most notable area of transition was on our copy and design desk — the team of employees responsible for designing each day’s newspaper, performing final story edits and updating SteamboatToday.com. I’d like to introduce our newest staff members to the community and also announce a couple of job changes for existing newsroom employees.

■ Nicole Miller, our longtime news editor, now is the assistant editor. Nicole previously oversaw the nightly design and editing of the print paper, and she now is transitioning into a daytime role in which she’ll have primary oversight of the reporting and photography staff. Nicole works from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. She can be reached at 970-871-4246 or nmiller@SteamboatToday.com.

■ Laura Mazade, first hired as a copy editor and designer, is our new evening editor. Laura will oversee our three-person copy and design team. She works Thursday to Monday and can be reached at 970-870-1368 or lmazade@SteamboatToday.com.

■ Vicky Ho joined our copy and design desk in September. A native of Houston, Vicky studied English and architecture at the University of Texas at Austin, where she also served as copy desk chief for The Daily Texan student-run newspaper. Vicky works Tuesday through Saturday evenings. She can reached at 970-871-4208 or vho@SteamboatToday.com.

■ Michael Schrantz also joined the copy and design desk in September. He came to Steamboat from Fairbanks, Alaska, where he worked for the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner. Michael has degrees in journalism and political science from the University of Missouri-Columbia. Michael works Sunday through Thursday evenings. He can be reached at 970-871-4254 or mschrantz@SteamboatToday.com.

As always, if you have any questions about our newsroom, please don’t hesitate to call me at 970-871-4221 or email bboyer@SteamboatToday.com.

Hmmm. Hope you meant "hone" skills in the second paragraph, and hope your new copy editors have more time to proofread. Just sayin'

yvb -- Hey, it could be worse. At least it's not some criminal with three joints in his pocket, calling cops names on his way to prison for life -- you know, REAL news.
