Police arrest Steamboat man at Snow Bowl for attempted robbery

— A Steamboat Springs man was arrested early Friday morning on suspicion of attempted aggravated robbery after he was found in a janitor’s closet inside Snow Bowl wearing a black ski mask and in possession of two knives.

According to the arrest affidavit, Jayce Bradley Peterson, 27, had been seen earlier Thursday evening at the Snow Bowl bowling alley and was acting suspicious. Employees asked him to leave after he was seen wandering around the building in unauthorized areas.

Peterson complied, but then a Snow Bowl employee said he reappeared in the building near closing time and walked toward a locker room and storage area, prompting a call to police.

Sgt. Gerard Geis and Officer Evan Driscoll, of the Steamboat Springs Police Department, responded to the trespass call just after midnight. Geis found Peterson in a small storage closet in the back of the locker room and placed him in handcuffs, according to the affidavit.

Driscoll reported smelling alcohol and vomit on Peterson, who claimed he had just had “too much to drink” and was waiting for a cab, according to the affidavit filed in Routt County Court.

Peterson told officers the knives were for hunting and the ski mask was for the cold weather.

Attempted aggravated robbery is a Class 4 felony. He also was booked on charges of second-degree trespassing and possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to the affadavit, Geis and Driscoll thought Peterson planned to rob the establishment after it closed.

Detective Dave Kleiber has been assigned to the investigation.

Driscoll said Friday that the employees of Snow Bowl could have helped prevent a serious crime by calling police to report the suspicious behavior.

“We’re confident we prevented a fairly bad situation from occurring,” he said. “We’re happy people paid attention to him and were watching what he was doing.”

They should have called the cops in the first place and not after he entered the building. Especially since there have been other incidents of late.

I wonder if when they found him, they looked at each other and said, "My Friend, My Friend... He's got a knife!" The Irony is, Phish opened their tour last night in New York...and that was the 2nd tune! I had to plug this.... Makes no sense to most of you. But if you love Phish...you will smile. :)
