— The eighth annual Steamboat Classic Lacrosse Tournament returns to Steamboat Springs this weekend.

The tournament, which will bring 32 top fifth-, sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade teams from across the state, begins Saturday and continues Sunday. Steamboat will field six teams, including two seventh-grade and two eighth-grade teams.

Play begins at 9 a.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. Sunday. Games will be played at Emerald Park and at Gardner Field at Steamboat Springs High School.

“It’s to get us some home games,” said Neill Redfern, Steamboat Youth Lacrosse director.

Most tournaments across the region take place on the Front Range and require the Youth Lacrosse program to travel, so Redfern created a tournament closer to home. The tournament has become one of the most popular in Colorado.

Redfern limits the tournament to 32 teams so organizers don’t have to spread it too far across town.

It also has become one of the more competitive tournaments in the state, usually drawing some of the top youth programs. The last time a Steamboat team won was in 2009, when a Steamboat eighth-grade team won the A Division.

Redfern suggested that people coming to watch games at Emerald Park either carpool, walk or ride their bikes. Because there will be multiple lacrosse games across multiple fields, parking at Emerald will be limited.
