— The Steamboat Rugby Club is looking for people interested in playing.

The team, which consistently is among the best in the Mountain League, meets at 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at Whistler Field for practices. The team plays against squads from across the Western Slope and in two tournaments.

The tournaments, the Steamboat Springs-hosted Cow Pie Classic and Ski Town Tournament in Vail, draw a large contingent of teams and players.

Last season, Steamboat lost in the Cow Pie Classic tournament, won the Ski Town Tournament and lost the Mountain League title to Vail.

“We lost our Godfather of rugby in Mike Hurley,” co-captain Tim Callahan said about Hurley, who revitalized Steamboat rugby five years ago. “But we’ve had a lot of guys show up. Fifteen turned up on Thursday, but we need people to start coming out for practice. We’re hoping that more people show at Tuesday and Thursday practices.”

Callahan, along with local Robbie Shine, will take over the program. Callahan encouraged any person interested in playing, regardless of experience, to come out and attend a practice.

He said the workout is second to none and the social aspect, especially for those new to town, can’t be beat.

“Socially it’s a pretty awesome scene,” he said. “Come play, and you’ll immediately have 15 new friends in town. Plus, I can’t think of a better workout, and it toughens you right up.”

All games take place on Saturdays and generally start at about 3 p.m. The first game of the year is June 11 at Glenwood Springs.

Those interested are encouraged to show up for practice. Questions also can be directed to Callahan at 847-334-9530 or Shine at 970-846-5335.
