Hayden police investigate Monday night car crimes

— The Hayden Police Department is looking for a person or people who broke into several cars Monday night.

Chief Gordon Booco would not specify how many cars were broken into because it might compromise the investigation, and he said more reports were coming in Tuesday as people got home from work.

One incident occurred at 345 S. Walnut St., Booco said. He said a homeowner walked outside to lock his car doors and noticed a dome light on and saw someone breaking into the car. The owner then reported hearing what he thought was a gunshot, although there is no confirmation that it was a gunshot, Booco said.

“He heard a pop and thought he saw a flash,” Booco said.

There is no description of the person, who then ran down the street.

Some video game controllers and a couple of small pairs of pants were reported missing from one of the cars that was broken into. Nothing was taken from the other cars.

“It looks like the person was looking for something specific, like cash,” Booco said.

Booco said anyone with information is asked to call the Hayden Police Department at 970-276-2535.
