Steamboat Springs Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club Alpine skiers Chandler Sedberry and Serina Kidd will represent the U.S. in the 19th annual Whistler Cup.
The event, which runs April 8 to 10, serves as one of the pre-eminent events for the 85 boys and 75 girls who come to the J3 Junior Nationals each year. Event winners are invited to Canada for the international event, which is one of the most coveted events for junior ski racers from across the world. It’s a chance to race against the best in the world, and for most racers in this age class, it’s the first taste of international competition.
The Whistler Cup is one of eight youth international races, and the only one held on North American snow. It features more than 20 nations.
U.S. Ski Team athletes like Julia Mancuso, Andrew Weibrecht and Lindsey Vonn all competed in the event as juniors.
Sedberry and Kidd advanced to the Whistler Cup by winning their respective events at the J3 Junior Championships in Aspen earlier this month.
Sedberry won the girls super G, while Kidd won the slalom.
The two are the first Alpine skiers from the Winter Sports Club to make the Whistler Cup since Julia Cooper did it in 2009.
Competition begins April 8 with a men’s and women’s super G. The three-day event will close the 2011 J3 winter season with a men’s GS and women’s slalom.
