2011 Rams track and field schedule
Steamboat Springs The Soroco High School track and field team opened the 2011 season Saturday in Frederick, registering multiple top finishes.
Sophomore Micaela Meyer led the Rams, finishing first in 300-meter hurdles, running a personal best. Ben Strait was third in shot put and fourth in triple jump. AJ Anderson was fourth in the 800, and Nic Paxton was fifth in triple jump.
The girls 400 relay team of Meyer, Lauryn Bruggink, and Ceanna and Josie Rossi finished third. The same team finished fourth in the 800 relay, and the team of Bruggink, the Rossi sisters and Carmen Mathews was fifth in the 1,600 relay.
On the boys side, the team of Pie Lombardi, Paxton, Strait and Jacob Hange finished sixth in the 800 relay.
Considering that Soroco was one of the smallest schools at the meet — the only other Class 2A team was West Grand — coach David Bruner said he was happy with the season opener.
“I’m pretty pleased with the outcome,” he said. “It was a good start, and we got some times in.”
It was also a new look for Class 2A track. The classification is following larger classifications, where the top 18 in each event qualify for state. That eliminates qualifying at the regional track meet.
Bruner said he wasn’t a huge fan of the top-18 format, but he said he thinks Soroco will still have success.
“Going to this top 18 is a little different,” he said, noting that the format requires him to change training routines. “We’re working on training and doing things different to factor into that top 18.”
Soroco returns to action April 5 with a freshman and sophomore meet in Glenwood Springs. The full team competes April 9 in Eagle Valley.
