There were Olympians and surprise champions, great college skiers and superb locals. There was a Norwegian from Utah, a rower from Oklahoma and a New Yorker whose training regimen was built largely around ultimate Frisbee. They and the more than 200 other racers who finished Saturday’s marathon of a Nordic ski race, the seventh annual North Routt Coureur des Bois, were the champions.

Sailors score seven first-quarter goals, rout Skiers

The Sailors came away with a 13-5 win after striking for three goals in the game’s first 2 minutes, 45 seconds, and seven total in a dominant first quarter. Steamboat now is 4-1 overall and 4-0 in conference play. The Sailors visit Summit at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

J4 regional championships finish with runs at Howelsen

Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club J4 skier Jett Seymour picked up his third and fourth top-10 finishes of the 2011 J4 Rocky/Central Regional Alpine Championships today in two slalom events at Howelsen Hill. Seymour, who finished ninth in super G and third in giant slalom Friday, registered a seventh-place finish in today’s first slalom run. He was 10th in the second run.

Crews are working to mitigate danger worsened by springtime temperature changes

Sometimes, all it took was a touch from Jason Simpson’s crowbar, and large boulders would come loose and crash below him on U.S. Highway 40. Other times, it took a little more convincing. Simpson is part of the Colorado Department of Transportation crew that has been trying to mitigate the rock danger along the cliffs between Steamboat Springs and Hayden.
