Although it was only the first meet of the year, the Steamboat Springs High School track and field team is already showing that its distance runners should have a good chance of qualifying for state.
Steamboat earned several top finishes Saturday at the Boathouse Traditional at Fossil Ridge High School, including a first-place finish from senior Jeff Sperry.
Sperry won the boys 800-meter run, finishing in 2 minutes, 7.35 seconds.
Jack Burger was third in the boys 1,600, finishing in 4:57.76. Asher Rohde was fifth in 5:02.28, and Scott Powers was sixth in 5:03.84
Rohde was sixth in the boys 3,200, finishing in 10:23.96.
Colton Lewer was 11th in the 400-meter dash, finishing in 57.48.
Steamboat took only the five boys to the first meet, allowing other athletes another week to train before competing.
The distance runners worked out all winter with distance coach Greg Long and showed Saturday that work was starting to pay off. The boys 1,600 relay team was fifth in 3:56.74, and the boys 3,200 relay team was fourth in 8:50.78. Both those teams consisted of Burger, Powers, Lewer and Sperry.
Steamboat returns to action Saturday in Delta.
