Steamboat Springs The end-of-season Western Regional Championships for ski jumping and Nordic combined begin today.
The field will consist of skiers from J6 through senior classes.
Events begin at 5:30 p.m. today with competition jumps on the HS 20, 28 and 42 hills. Action continues from 8:15 a.m. to noon Saturday with competition jumps on the HS 75 and 100 hills. The Nordic combined races will begin at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Brent Romick Rodeo Arena.
“It’s the final one for the year,” Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club Nordic Director Todd Wilson said. “We try to have the Western Regionals in March to wrap up the season.”
The weekend signifies the end of most Nordic events. Several Steamboat skiers are in Norway competing in the Continental Cup, and the Nordic combined World Cup also wraps up this weekend.
More than 40 Steamboat skiers are expected to join Park City, Utah; Aspen; and the Canadian Junior National team athletes.
Awards will be given in ski jumping and Nordic combined. Class J6 through a senior class are competing, with the one jump in each event serving as a precursor to Saturday’s Nordic combined race.
“We’ll have a wide range of competitors,” Wilson said. “It’s an exciting time. A lot of the kids have been training for a while and are doing better and jumping bigger hills.”
