— Gov. John Hickenlooper is scheduled to speak at an invite-only event for local service club members Wednesday in Steamboat Springs, during a swing through Northwest Colorado to discuss topics including economic development.

Winnie DelliQuadri, Steamboat Springs’ government programs manager, said invites went out late last week to more than 150 members of local service clubs including the Steamboat and Ski Town Rotary groups, Kiwanis Club of Steamboat Springs, Steamboat Springs Lions Club, the Young Professionals Network and more. Elected officials including Steamboat Springs City Council members and Routt County commissioners also will attend Wednesday’s event, from 2 to 3 p.m. at Library Hall in Bud Werner Memorial Library.

“He’ll be describing his vision for what he wants to do … to connect people to their state government,” DelliQuadri said. “What I have noticed is that he’s very focused on collaboration and relationships.”

Hickenlooper spokesman Eric Brown said the Denver Democrat has been making an effort to tap into service clubs because their members, by definition, are involved in their communities and have ready ideas.

DelliQuadri said space constraints in Library Hall and the governor’s desire to meet with service club members prevent the event from being open to the general public.

Those who have a hankering to meet with Hickenlooper, though, could travel to Craig on Wednesday. The governor will head west from Steamboat and is scheduled to attend a State of the County 2011 event hosted by the Craig Chamber of Commerce, from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Holiday Inn of Craig.

Before that event, if time allows, Hickenlooper could catch the latter half of a regional economic development meeting that’s also in Craig on Wednesday.

The Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade hosts the public event from 3 to 5:30 p.m. at the Center of Craig, 601 Yampa Ave., with representatives from Moffat, Routt, Rio Blanco, Mesa and Garfield counties.

OEDIT representatives and Hickenlooper are traveling the state to promote the Bottom-Up Economic Development Plan Initiative, which asks each of Colorado’s 64 counties to submit a new or updated economic development plan to the state by April 15. Those plans could be formed into regional plans by a target date of May 15, and ultimately could result in a statewide economic development plan that incorporates strategies for each county.
