— Ski Haus owner Rod Schrage has pulled a building permit for a three-story addition to the existing store at U.S. Highway 40 and Pine Grove Road.

The construction project would add 3,828 square feet to the southwest façade of the building — the side that faces the highway.

In addition to ski and snowboard equipment and rentals, Ski Haus specializes in outdoor sporting goods and has been in business in Steamboat Springs since 1969.

The addition would closely resemble the existing large gabled area that peaks just below the cupola at the top of the building. It would bring the total square footage of the 13,380-square-foot building to 17,708 square feet.

Fairview Construction is the general contractor, according to the building permit. The permit valuation is $330,610.

Steamboat Springs Planning Department Director Tyler Gibbs approved the new construction administratively, and no public hearings were held, though surrounding property owners were notified about the pending approval. Senior City Planner Bob Keenan said additions of less than 16,000 square feet to existing buildings are eligible for administrative approval.

Eric Smith Associates, the architectural firm for the existing Ski Haus building, designed the addition. A memo from the firm’s Kate Leggett indicates the same exterior building materials will be used on the addition. Elevation drawings show similar large expanses of windows.

Plans call for the garden-level and first-level additions to comprise 1,644 square feet each. The mezzanine level would be the smallest at 540 square feet.

The primary Ski Haus location moved across Pine Grove Road into the current building in 2001 from a building that Schrage expanded from a gas station to add sporting goods on the second level and a liquor store behind the gas pumps and convenience store.
