— The USA Pro Cycling Challenge is inviting sports and cycling fans to create the national and host city commemorative posters for the inaugural international cycling competition Aug. 22 to 28, according to a news release. People can submit their artwork through the event’s Facebook page, and submissions will be accepted until 5 p.m. Thursday. Each winner will receive $500 and four VIP Hospitality tickets to the final stage of the race in Denver.

Artists will be submitting artwork for consideration as one of 12 official posters: one for the national commemorative poster and 11 for each of the host cities (Colorado Springs, Salida, Crested Butte, Gunnison, Aspen, Vail, Avon, Steamboat Springs, Breckenridge, Golden and Denver.) The posters will be used throughout the event for promotional activities.

Fans can enter the contest on www.facebook.com/usapro

cyclingchallenge by clicking on the contest link on the left side of the page to submit artwork. All entries must be capable of being posted on Facebook (only online entries will be eligible). This requires either that the artwork be in digital media or that a digital photograph of the artwork be made and posted in accordance with the rules, terms and conditions adopted by Facebook. Each file must be in JPEG format and otherwise comply with Facebook’s requirements for posting photographs.

It is my understanding that the terms for entering the art contest are very unfavorable to the artist and therefore most Steamboat artists do not want to enter. Just for entering, artists must give up all rights, ownership and copyright to the work. $500 plus a VIP pass is not sufficient compensation for real artists to enter this contest. It is too bad because we have some amazing artists here in Steamboat and i am sure we could have an awesome poster.

Maybe City Counsel or the Commissioners could mandate that something be done about it and possibly even appropriate some funding for it that would be a little more a suitable for a fine artist to come in and do it up right? Perhaps even a ballot measure?

Artist that believe it is worth more should use thier talents elsewhere and not worry about the money.

I am not good at art but thinking it could be a hairless fox riding a bike and smoking a joint in a RMR jersey with the steamboat logo in the background. It will represent steamboat as a hairless fox, bicycle and pot loving community.
