— Marabou Ranch packs everything from a movie theater to private trout fishing ponds. Mountain bike races, though, are rare, and when the Steamboat Springs Town Challenge Mountain Bike Race Series made its annual stop at the rural Routt County housing development Wednesday, resident Cheryl Durham, her daughter Anna Grace Durham and their guests, Page Sobek and David Sobek, didn’t miss the opportunity.

They dragged their deck furniture from their Elk River-side home, poured a few drinks and popped open a bag of pita chips and a dish of hummus.

This, at 228 racers the largest field in the series’ history, was not something to be missed.

The masses of riders, starting in a dozen waves, swept passed the cheering fans, through cottonwood thickets and along the river. They cut up Marabou’s gentle slopes and through its rolling terrain, and they flew back to the finish line, wide smiles showing why in its fourth year, this has become the favorite Town Challenge race.

“This is just a great venue to hold a race,” series director Gretchen Sehler said. “The weather was great out here, and everyone’s jazzed to be riding right now.”

The usual suspects dominated Wednesday’s action. In the season series’ second race, Brad Bingham was again a champion, walloping the men’s field to finish well out in front, by himself in 50 minutes, 20 seconds.

Peter Kalmes was second at 51:04, and Trevor Walz was third in 51:44.

Kelly Boniface also stayed perfect on the season, winning the women’s division easily after friendly rival Tammy Jacques pulled out early in the race with a flat tire. Boniface finished in 56:51. Katie Lindquist was second at 1:03:29, and Kathleen Fitzsimmons was third at 1:06:29.

No one showed up to see the top athletes dominate, however. Instead, Marabou proved so popular again because it’s so rarely made available to ride, and when it is, it’s seen as a course anyone can tackle.

“It’s a fun course,” Zeb Tipton said.

Tipton, 17, never stopped riding, but he is just getting back into racing. He was a regular in Town Challenge events as a child, assaulting the short courses that serve as the introduction to competitive cycling in Steamboat.

He took years off, however, until this summer, when he decided to again tackle the competitive side of the sport. Riding in the youth male 16-18 division, he finished the course in 54:44.

“There’s not a lot of uphills, and the downhills are a lot of fun, sharp turns,” Tipton said. “Marabou, it’s unlike anywhere else, and I’ve biked everywhere.”

Thanks to Marabou and the whole Town Challenge Team for a great race! Just don't believe the part about no hills because everyone there seemed to agree that there is plenty of climbing on the course and just when you think it is done there is another section.

Looking forward to more races this summer, the Town Challenge is a Steamboat Classic and attracts a great group of people to compete and cheer on the riders. The best part is the kids races.
