Steamboat Springs — Nearly every weekend throughout the spring and summer, one can find myriad garage sales in Steamboat that will more than fill a morning (and the car trunk). This past weekend was no exception, including several that were held as fundraisers in support of girls from the Tasaru Girls Rescue Centre in Kenya and the Macedonian Mission, among others. We who live here are truly blessed to be part of a community of friends and neighbors who generously offer their time, donated goods and financial support. The dollars raised are being used to change lives elsewhere and allow us a way to reach beyond the Yampa Valley.
Having said that, it’s also worth remembering that these garage sales, as well as donations to other nonprofit organizations such as LIFT-UP of Routt County, should not be used as a convenient way for getting rid of — shall I be blunt — our junk. Though “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure” holds true in many cases, we should also be responsible when contributing. Items in poor condition, broken or just plain worn out are unlikely to be sold, and then can often cost time and money to be disposed of.
And lastly, as we pare down our accumulated stuff, let us try to remember the phrase “Live simply, so that others may simply live.”
