— To be clear, a group of four runners in Routt County for a weekend softball tournament in Steamboat Springs said they enjoyed Saturday’s Hayden Cog Run, the third race in the Steamboat Springs Running Series. They just took a little exception with the course description.

“Rolling hills?” Pat Morris said after the race. “Rolling hills doesn’t describe that. That was more than rolling hills.”

The terrain may have left them exhausted, but it didn’t seem to ruin their trip. Each of the Front Range runners placed, and Rachael Lopez, a stand-out runner at Brighton High School, won the 5-kilometer race.

The group joined more than 70 runners who participated in three Saturday races, the runners swarming out of town on a-little-more-than-rolling hills, and 28 firing up the Cog Road in the signature 8.4-mile test.

Nick Sunseri proved the class of the men’s field, winning his second Running Series event in as many weeks. He wowed people in the 10-kilometer race at last weekend’s Steamboat Marathon, and he dropped jaws again Saturday in Hayden, knocking off the challenging Cog in 49 minutes, 15 seconds.

“This was a little harder, going uphill,” Sunseri said, comparing his races of the past two weeks. “I’m glad we got to the top when we did. I was wearing pretty thin.”

Craig’s Todd Trapp ensured that Sunseri couldn’t give in to what he said was, at least on the way up, growing to be an intense desire to cut the pace. Trapp stayed close, but he couldn’t ever pull even and ended up finishing at 51:05. Dennis Flannigan was third in 54:37.

Hannah Williams won the women’s race in 1:04:51, ahead of second-place Mary Schuette, in 1:11:37 and Gatlynn Hicks, at 1:16:32.

Lopez won the 5K outright in 24:05. Hayden’s Savannah Williams was second among the women and third overall at 25:10, and Savannah Bongiorno sprinted to grab third among the women, in 26:17.

Jacob Morris, a part of the day-tripping softball group, was the top male finisher in 24:14. Koleman Williams was second at 25:15, and Levi Salazar was third at 27:26.

Recent Hayden High School graduate Chris Zirkle had little trouble dominating the 10K, finishing in 38:16. Robert Forster was second at 45:03, and Pat Morris was third among the men in 54:50.

Pamela Palmquist was the top woman in the 10K at 50:53. Meredith MacFarlane was second at 59:30, and Linda Casner was third at 1:00:10.
