Downhill mountain biking set to begin

— As mountain biking trails at Steamboat Ski Area continue to melt off, options for downhill mountain bikers elsewhere are starting to pop up.

Keystone Mountain and SolVista Bike Park in Granby are scheduled to open this week to downhill mountain bikers, according to their websites.

At Keystone, downhill mountain biking is set to be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. starting Saturday.

Few trails are scheduled to open, with just the bottom section clear for riding. People can ride the trails from the gondola midstation down. No big features are open and probably won’t be until June 17.

SolVista Bike Park was scheduled to open Thursday. It will be open from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursdays, noon to 7 p.m. Fridays, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturdays and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays.

Saturday also marks the much-anticipated opening of the Valmont Bike Park in Boulder.

The 40-acre park is a biker’s dream. It has a BMX course, a cyclocross course, a pump track, dirt jumps, singletrack trails and a terrain park, among other features.

The park is designed for every level of rider. Construction of the park started in 2009 with the Boulder Mountainbike Alliance raising about $500,000 to go with $250,000 in grants to build the park.

The grand opening is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday.

Locally, the Ski Time Square pump track is open and in great shape.

Wish we were as cool as other places in Colorado, seems there is a problem with navigating the bureaucratic BS here in steamboat where others just jump right through it. Will there ever be a Rad DH mtn Bike Park? Prob not this summer.............

Why is the new DH trail not yet approved from the USFS?

Anyone who wants to see this trail built this summer needs to call the USFS and ask for the trail plan to be approved.
