— It’s hard to argue that there’s been a more successful high school golf program on the Western Slope than the one in Steamboat Springs.

The Sailors made the state tournament seven straight years from 2003 to 2009, and a large part of that success can be directly attributed to the Steamboat Golf Shoot-Out, a benefit golf tournament for the Steamboat Springs Junior Golf Association.

The tournament, now in its ninth year, needs more players for Monday’s event. Registration is due Friday. The cost is $135 per player, down from $175 last year.

The format is a shamble, with sign-in beginning at 11 a.m. and a shotgun start to follow at 1 p.m. The tournament again will take place at Catamount Ranch & Club.

“This is a tournament vital to the progress of youth golf throughout Steamboat Springs,” high school golf coach Steve Dodson said. “Proceeds from this event go directly to the Steamboat Springs Junior Golf Association and from there will provide financial aid to youth golf throughout the valley.”

Dodson said the goal of the tournament is to get young people involved in the game. That pipeline then helps the high school team.

“The earlier we can get kids involved with this game the greater chance they will have in competing at the high school level and beyond,” he said.

To register, call Dodson at 970-879-9045 or Tom Taylor at 970-846-4420.

Ski Town Classic

Wednesday marks the last day people can register for the Ski Town USA Golf Classic tournament at early registration prices.

Early registration is $350 per person or $1,350 per four-person team. After Wednesday, those prices go up to $375 and $1,500, respectively.

The tournament takes place June 17 and 18. Players will play Rollingstone Ranch Golf Club one day and Haymaker Golf Course the other day.

To register, download a form at www.skitownclassic.com and fax it to 970-879-1185 or email golf@skitownclassic.com.

The tournament serves as the largest fundraiser of the year for Steamboat’s two Rotary Clubs. A portion of the proceeds also go to Routt County United Way.

Luke: Regarding your golf tournaments article, "The format is a shamble..." What is the world is a "golf SHAMBLE?"
