Stepping Out in Routt: Yampa River Botanic Park loop

If you go

Length: 1/2 mile (1/4 mile out and back to gate; 1/4 mile loop in park)

Estimated time: 15 to 20 minutes

Level: Easy

Grade: Flat

Surface: Gravel path

Start: From U.S. Highway 40, turn west on Trafalgar Drive and follow the signs to Yampa River Botanic Park parking lot.

Bus access: Take the Red or Yellow line to the Iron Horse Inn stop, and walk 1/3 mile to the Botanic Park parking lot.

— This week, take your mind off walking and look at the great variety of plants, trees and shrubs in the Yampa River Botanic Park. A short walk from the parking lot leads you to the gate of this downtown garden oasis. Enter the gate and walk straight to take the loop in a clockwise direction. The park emphasizes native plants that flourish in this area. Many of the more than 40 gardens are sponsored by members of the community.

You don’t have to be a garden enthusiast to appreciate this park as the perfect location to start an exercise program: The surroundings distract you and provide shade, the path is not typically crowded, and there are many benches to rest. There is a restroom with a drinking fountain about halfway around the loop in the Trillium House, which is in the southwest corner or the park near the river. If you are feeling up for it, take more than one lap around the park, and explore different side paths.

The park is open from dawn to dusk every day from May 1 to Oct. 30, and admission is free. Keep this loop in mind at 12:15 p.m. Thursdays in July and August when the park hosts free Music on the Green concerts. The path will be crowded during these times, so come early or stay late to get your walk in before or after the show.

What to bring

Shoes: While it is beneficial to have a walking specific or running shoe, any comfortable shoes with good traction that fit your feet well will get you started. Use cotton/polyester blend or wool socks to keep your feet dry.

Clothes: Dress in comfortable, loose clothing. A polyester blend or wool shirt will wick away moisture to keep you dry and comfortable. Bring a hat to block the sun or help keep warm, depending on the weather. Wear sunglasses with UV protection to keep your eyes safe from damaging sun rays. Don’t forget to apply sunscreen.

Water: Drink a glass of water before and after exercising. Bring water with you on walks longer than an hour, on hot days or if it helps to quench your thirst during the walks.
