Steamboat swimmers register top finishes in Montrose

— Nine members of the Steamboat Springs Team Lightning swim team traveled to the Montrose Summer Open during the weekend in one last bid to qualify for this weekend’s Western Slope Championships or Junior Olympics.

Leading the way for Steamboat was Samantha Terranova who achieved a Junior Olympic time in the 800-meter freestyle.

Catie Castignet qualified for the Western Slopes in the 200 free, while Mickinley McAtee qualified in the 100 fly.

Also swimming for Steamboat was Brenden Carta, Tyler Terranova, Frank Ruppel, Tommy Mewborn, Reilly Mewborn and Anna Terranova.

The team travels to Grand Junction on Friday for the Western Slope Championships, where it will take more than 30 swimmers to compete against top teams from across Colorado.

After that, six swimmers that have qualified for the Junior Olympics will start competing July 29 in Denver at the Colorado Long Course state meet.
