Steamboat man's attempted murder trial still on hold

The trial for Robert Cash is on hold indefinitely until his competency can be determined.
Fourteenth Judicial District Judge Shelley Hill ordered the most recent in-patient competency evaluation on May 16, when his trial was scheduled to start.
Cash was arrested after a June 2010 incident in which police say he shot his wife and then himself in their west Steamboat Springs home. He is charged with attempted first-degree murder and crime of violence, both felonies. If convicted, he could be sentenced to 16 to 48 years in prison.
Routt County Jail Lt. Michelle Richardson said she had spoken with Colorado State Hospital in Pueblo and was told it may be six to eight months before they had a bed available for Cash.
“There is such a backlog at the hospital, we are still waiting for a bed,” Richardson said. “I was informed he was on the waiting list, and they would let us know when they have availability.”
