— The Hayden Public Library is proud to announce that 9-year-old Maria Gutierrez Valdez was named the summer reading program’s fifth Reader of the Week. Her parents are Tacha Valdez and Jose Gutierrez. She has three brothers: Rene, 20, Raul, 19, and Jorge, 16. She has one sister, Valeria, 6. Maria was born in Steamboat Springs and has lived in Hayden her entire life. She doesn’t have any pets but wants to own a border collie one day. She would name it Blueberry.

Maria wants to be a veterinarian when she gets older because she loves animals. Her favorite colors are green and blue, and her favorite food is pizza. Her favorite movie is “My Babysitter’s a Vampire.” Her favorite sport is basketball, and when she has some free time, she likes to hang out with her friends, Michelle, Kimberly, Kathy, Morgan Bell, Hannah, Venessa, Brandon, Angel Valdez and Cassidy Bush as well as her brothers and her sister. She also enjoys reading with her “Book Buddies” at the library. She likes to play with her sister, go to the library and ride bikes. Her favorite book is “Framed,” by Gordon Korman. She will be entering the fourth grade in fall. She and her family plan to stay home and enjoy Hayden this summer.

When asked whether she had any advice for other kids about reading, she said, “Read more because you will be smarter.” When she learned she was the Reader of the Week, Maria said she felt happy. “When I left the library, I went crazy with happiness,” she said.

Congratulations, Maria!
