2011 Running Series schedule

— It may have seemed like an atypical day at Howelsen Hill.

But in reality, it was just another summer day in Steamboat Springs. For those who competed in the Howelsen Hill 8-miler today and had the chance to pause atop Howelsen, a brief look back down the valley revealed something.

To the left there was Art in the Park. Just below, the Steamboat Doubles volleyball tournament was taking place. Farther down to the right, makeshift goal posts signified the 37th annual Cow Pie Classic rugby tournament. Up above and in the distance, the Hot Air Balloon Rodeo was wrapping up.

“It was great,” Steamboat Springs Running Series Race Director Cara Marrs said. “This is probably a record for this race as far as numbers.”

More than 120 runners descended on Howelsen Hill for either a four- or eight-mile run.

With the recent thunderstorms and rain in the area, the trails were muddy. But the overcast skies and lower temperatures proved for a faster race.

“My time was faster this year,” said Hannah Williams, who won the women’s eight-mile race in 1:09:47. “It was a little bit muddy. I think (the temperature) helped. When it’s hot, it makes it harder. It was really comfortable running conditions except for the mud.”

Kerrie Bruxvoort was second in the women’s eight-mile run, finishing in 1:10:13, and Kelly Bedell was third in 1:10:45.

On the men’s side of the eight-mile run, it was more of the same. Nick Sunseri blazed the course in 56:37, finishing first. Sunseri and third-place finisher Todd Trapp ran most of the race together until the final mile, when both got lost and veered off the course.

Second-place finisher Andy Anderson took the lead momentarily, before Sunseri sprinted to the finish line.

It was Sunseri’s fourth straight win in the Running Series.

“I’m going to try to win the series,” Sunseri said. “That’s the plan.”

Derek Leidigh won the men’s four-mile run in 30:16. Wyatt Villa was second in 33:34, and John Mah was third in 36:34.

Hanah Cassie paved the way in the women’s four-miler, finishing in 42:39. Rachael Green was second in 44:31, and Tiffany Gebhardt was third in 45:37.

The event was a benefit for Rocky Mountain Youth Corps. Saturday’s race raised more than $600 for the group.

The next Running Series race is the Spring Creek Memorial on July 23. There will be nine-mile and five-kilometer races. Register at www.runningseries.com.
