Ski Area race takes toll on large field Wednesday

— The results say it was Brad Bingham and Tammy Jacques, but dirt-covered faces and fresh, ruby-red scars, a field of flat tires and the sirens of a local emergency rescue crew made it clear: The winner of Wednesday night’s Town Challenge race was Mount Werner.

Racer Simon Demby-Myers had to be evacuated by ambulance after an accident on the fast descent on the Zig Zag mountain bike trail, but many others put their pain on display with tired eyes and gritted teeth. Click here for more on Demby-Myers and his injury.

Wednesday’s Sunshine Loop Cross-Country mountain bike race at Steamboat Ski Area was a toughie.

“A course like this, sometimes people go too fast, and they’re riding on the edge. There were a lot of crashes and a lot of flats,” race director Gretchen Sehler said. “People liked the course. They thought it was pretty fun, or they thought it was a hard challenge, but that’s what made it good.”

Bingham won the men’s side of the race, which sent riders from the base of the ski area to the top via Valley View, then back down mostly on Zig Zag. He finished the daunting course in 1 hour, 17 seconds. Peter Kalmes wasn’t far behind, finishing in 1:01:18, and Barkley Robinson logged his highest finish of the season, crossing in third at 1:03.

Jacques finished in 1:10:44, besting Kelly Boniface, who was second in 1:14:09, for the first time in the three-race deep season. Kate Rench was third in 1:19:24.

“It was a really brutal climb, and coming down was rough because everyone was tired,” men’s expert racer D.J. Nudy said.

The race attracted another large crowd, drawing 195 cyclists.
