Steamboat Springs The Soroco boys basketball team struggled with Paonia full-court pressure Saturday, falling 83-53.
Coach Andy Johnson said he saw signs of progress in his team, but not consistently enough to win tough games.
“We ended up getting some easy baskets off that press,” he said. “We didn’t get enough, obviously.”
Leif Carlson scored 15 points, Michael Rossi had 11 and Matthew Regan had 9.
After trailing by 16 in the first quarter, the Rams did piece together a strong surge. They took advantage of a Paonia intentional foul and cut into the lead. Three bad turnovers helped reverse the momentum, however.
“We need to make better decisions with the basketball,” Johnson said. “We break down when the first look isn’t there. We panic and dribble or throw it away. After watching some tape, we’re missing some easy looks. We keep our heads down and don’t have the confidence to throw it there. If we can start taking advantage of that, the scores could be a lot closer than they have been.”
