Steamboat Springs The Steamboat Springs girls basketball team had lapses of poor play early and weren’t able to overcome a 14-point first-half deficit, falling, 61-51, at home to Moffat County on Friday.
The Sailors were down 11-8 early in the second quarter when the Bulldogs went on a 14-3 run to extend their lead to 25-11.
“When you spot them 14 points, you have to play a tremendously great half to come back,” Steamboat coach John Ameen said. “We didn’t play bad in the second half, but it wasn’t enough to surpass a 14-point deficit.”
Steamboat played well in the second half, and by midway through the third quarter, it had cut a 35-19 Bulldogs lead to 37-31. But Moffat County pulled away again and led by as much as 52-36 in the fourth quarter before another Steamboat rally.
Behind senior Hannah Moore, the Sailors cut the Bulldogs lead to 52-45 at the 3:00 mark, but Moffat hit 10 of its 15 free throws in the fourth quarter to make the lead stand.
Moore led all scorers with 30.
Steamboat (8-8 overall, 3-3 in league play) resumes play at 4 p.m. today at home against Glenwood Springs.
