Hayden boys basketball pass Soroco, 59-44

Joel Reichenberger

— The Hayden boys basketball team got up early and didn’t let off the gas until the fourth quarter Friday night, picking up a big win against Soroco, 59-44.

The Tigers, paced by Graig Medvesk’s 20 points, were up 18-6 after one quarter and 31-9 midway through the second quarter.

Ben Williams added 10 for the Tigers.

“It was all about teamwork,” said Hayden’s Brandon Ray, who finished with eight points. “We knew this would be a tough game, and we played really good against them.”

Soroco struggled against Hayden’s experienced, aggressive guards, racking up turnovers. The Rams did piece together a solid fourth quarter, outscoring Hayden, 23-10, to cut into the already decisive deficit.

Nic Paxton led Soroco with 15 points. Leif Carlson had 12.

“That’s the first press we’ve seen where they hang it on you and don’t stop until it works,” Soroco coach Andy Johnson said. “If our ball handling right at the beginning had been a little different, maybe we could have hung around a little longer.
