— The Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club’s mission of turning out self-reliant, goal-oriented young adults on and off the ski runs is reflected in the design of the button for the 98th Winter Carnival, which embodies one of the most significant fundraisers for the nonprofit club.

The button is rimmed with the message: Building athletes … Building individuals.

“This year’s button was designed by Grace Stamps, a senior at Steamboat Springs High School,” said Caroline Bohlmann, the club’s special events director. “They really are quite impressive and will be a great collector’s item.”

The button has a young cowboy on horseback, emblematic of skijoring street events, with youngsters on skis pulled down Lincoln Avenue by a galloping quarter horse. Those events are the symbolic joining of the agricultural, town and resort communities as well as an eye-opening event for spectators on vacation from across the nation.

The cowboy at the center of the button is flanked by young athletes as well as a member of the Steamboat Springs High School Ski Band.

Stamps said she created the art using Prismacolor markers and pens. Her design was chosen from among all of last year’s students in advanced placement art. Stamps has applied for admission to several private art schools.

The buttons cost $7 again this year, and they serve as admission to all Winter Carnival events.

Buttons can be purchased at the Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association visitor center next to Kum & Go on Anglers Drive, at the Winter Sports Club office at Howelsen Hill, at downtown businesses and at most events.

Spectators and event participants are encouraged to buy and wear an official Winter Carnival button to show their support of the carnival and of the club. All proceeds help support the club’s mission of developing champions.

The Winter Sports Club strives to provide sufficient scholarship money to ensure that all youngsters in Northwest Colorado have the opportunity to experience competitive snow sports. A relative few will be named to the U.S. Ski Team and strive for Olympic medals.
