Steamboat briefs: Visiting Nurse Association’s Sue Birch is a finalist for PBS award

Steamboat Springs Sue Birch, of Steamboat Springs, is a finalist for a 2011 Be More Award from Rocky Mountain PBS. Birch served since 1994 as CEO of the Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association before resigning Dec. 30 to take a position in Gov. John Hickenlooper’s cabinet as executive director of the state’s Department of Health Care Policy and Financing.
The winner of the Be More Award will be announced at Rocky Mountain PBS’s 2011 Newsmakers Luncheon, March 10 at The Brown Palace Hotel in Denver. Tickets cost $100. Learn more at http://www.rmpbs.org/calendarEvents/?event=9976.
Yoga Day brings in $1,238 for local nonprofit groups
Saturday’s Yoga Day event netted proceeds of $1,238, which the Yoga Center of Steamboat will split between Integrated Community and Community Cultivation. The amount is a record for the three years that the center has participated in Yoga Day, organizer Patty Zimmer said. Yoga instructors donated their time for classes throughout the day.
Registration open for youth basketball; coaches sought
The city of Steamboat Springs Parks, Open Space and Recreational Services Department is accepting registrations for the 2011 Youth Basketball League. All boys and girls in third through sixth grade are welcome to play in this fun, noncompetitive learning environment. Registration is $70 per participant and will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis until Feb 3. Register at the Parks and Recreation Department office, 245 Howelsen Parkway. Tickets available for Feb. 12 Symphony Soiree fundraiser
Tickets now are available for the Symphony Soiree and Swing on Feb. 12 at The Steamboat Grand. Dance instruction by Susan Dorsey and Charles Horton starts at 6 p.m. Enjoy dessert and coffee during a performance by Steamboat String Quartet, led by Steamboat Symphony Orchestra Concertmaster Teresa Steffen Greenlee, then dance with the Steamboat Swings Big Band. The event calls for cocktail attire. Proceeds from a silent auction benefit the orchestra. Line dancing classes to be offered Thursday in Hayden
Colorado Northwestern Community College is offering line dancing with instructor Julie Hanna from 6 to 7:15 p.m. Thursdays Feb. 3 through April 21 at the Haven Community Center in Hayden. The cost is $42. Call Lindsay at 970-276-7291 to register.
Newborn Network offering resources for new parents
Newborn Network is a support system dedicated to providing parenting and resource information to all families who live in Routt County and have children from birth to age 3. Newborn Network’s free services include weekly networking and education groups, parenting education home visits, a lending library of parenting topics and a series of gift bags. Visiting Nurse Association offers free breast exams
The Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association has announced a program to reduce breast and cervical cancer mortality through the Women’s Wellness Connection. The WWC provides free breast and cervical exams and selected diagnostic services to women ages 40 to 65 who meet financial qualifications.
The program targets women who have not had a mammogram or Pap test within the past year or women who have lost insurance, had an abnormal finding, and need follow-up. Call the VNA at 970-871-7646.
