Steamboat’s Farny grabs 1st at Vail freestyle event

— Steamboat’s Luke Farny shined on the Rocky Mountain Freestyle moguls circuit, earning his first single moguls win Saturday then finishing second in the dual moguls event Sunday in Vail.

Farny edged out Peter Kachadurian on Saturday, then just barely slipped to second in the championship of the dual moguls.

“He’s our next up-and-comer,” Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club freestyle coach Nate Bird said. “He’s standing out at the top of the regional freestyle scene and that’s fun to see.”

Steamboat got top finishes from Isabella Cedercreutz, who was fourth Saturday in single moguls and third Sunday in duals.

Bennett Roukema was fifth Saturday and third Sunday; Bradley Hoefer was 13th on Saturday and fifth on Sunday; Kevin Broten was 19th on Saturday and seventh on Sunday; and George DeGrandis was 10th Sunday.

“It was a really good weekend,” Bird said. “We have a whole crew of kids who

have just moved up to skiing with the big boys. It was great to see them out there competing, having fun and getting more confidence.

“In a few years, they’ll be the Ryan Dyers and Luke Farnys out there.”
