Steamboat Springs Steamboat Springs High School girls basketball coach John Ameen said he’s rarely seen his team tougher or more focused than it was Saturday in half of its game against Delta.
Unfortunately for the Sailors, that half was the second half, and it came after a disastrous first half that eventually led to a 52-46 loss.
“That second half was a lot of fun to play,” Ameen said. “The girls showed tremendous fight and perseverance to fight back the way they did.”
Steamboat was outscored 25-5 in the second quarter, blowing open a game that had been a one-point contest after the first quarter. They trailed 36-15 at halftime but cut the deficit to 6 by the start of the fourth quarter.
The Sailors’ Hannah Moore scored 28 points to her team and Tara Spitellie added 13, but Ameen said the improved play was a
team effort.
“Eryn Rinck played great defense. Megan Stabile got in and created havoc on the ball for us. Katie Lettunich shot down their post in the second half. Sydney Bauknecht had a handful of steals,” Ameen said. “We were all over the place.”
