Steamboat Springs — Soroco High School boys basketball coach Andy Johnson said a young team lacking varsity experience like his can go through growing pains from time to time.
Saturday’s game at West Grand High School was one of those pains.
The Mustangs focused on limiting Soroco’s top scorers and were successful, downing the Rams, 48-23.
“We were never able to get any rhythm or flow,” Johnson said. “Then they had enough offense to allow them to win. They took a lot of things away from us that we were trying to do and we didn’t adjust really well.”
Johnson said his team did rebound better than it has, but at least for one day the offense shortcomings drowned out that progress.
“When you’re trying to pull kids together who don’t have a lot of varsity experience and you’re getting into the heart of the league schedule, sometimes things don’t go so well,” Johnson said.
Soroco returns to the court Friday for a game against Hayden, a rival but one of the league’s best teams to this point in the season.
“It doesn’t get any easier,” Johnson said.
