— With senior star Charles Wood out with an illness, Steamboat Springs High School boys basketball coach Luke DeWolfe said he didn’t know what to expect Saturday as the Sailors traveled to play Delta.

What he got was a whole lot of Isiah Mendoza-Forsyth.

Mendoza-Forsyth erupted for 27 points, catapulting Steamboat to a 60-44 victory.

“I was just really proud of him,” DeWolfe said. “For a long time, we’ve known he was capable of putting together a performance like this, ever since he was a freshman. He’s come close, had good games, but he’s never put together one as complete as this.”

Mendoza-Forsyth hit three 3-point shots, including a huge one late in the second quarter to set the halftime margin at 5 points.

He and his team kept up the pressure in the second half.

“Isiah was really the difference,” DeWolfe said. “He took it upon himself, knowing this was a must-win game if we want to remain close to being able to reach that league title. It wasn’t just him, but he did a nice job getting everyone involved and at the same time making sure he was going to get his shots.”

Justin Anderson hit three treys as well and finished with 14 points.

“It was a big win for us, especially without Charles being there,” DeWolfe said. “These kinds of wins make us that much stronger for when Charles does get back.”
